In fact, things will be much simpler from now on! Each month we will be training at two predetermined locations for the entire month.

DECEMBER SCHEDULE:*

3:00 PM Sharp:

Fatburger/Ricky’s outside Stadium Station

Warm-up & Focused Training in surrounding area.

Sundown – End:

Ironworks (end of main st)

Focused Training.

Why are we changing the structure for Sundays?
So now that you know the spots you can simply go immediately to them each week until the month ends. Warm Ups will begin at the first spot at 3:00 sharp led by the most senior athlete in attendance. Another warm up will begin at 3:30. Please take part in the warm up each week. It is a very important part of training and will actually improve your performance for the day as well as keep you injury free!

“AUGH no! lame! why are we doing this! I hate change!”
I know it seems confusing now, but this will actually be a lot easier on everyone as the weeks progress. if you’re late for a session you will know exactly where everyone is!

“But I like doing random stuff every week! I’ll get bored at the same spot!”
Horse Poo! You’ll be able to make a challenge for yourself, and if you don’t succeed at it one week you’ll have 2 or 3 more weeks to complete it. You’ll also be able to improve your speed and flow with challenges you’ve already completed.

“But how will I get better if I’m always doing the same thing?”
That’s just it! You will get better practicing the same thing over and over. Randomization wastes time and doesn’t allow you to improve skills. Basically by training at the same spot 4 weeks in a row you will get better at Parkour and probably be surprised by what you’re able to accomplish at other spots.

“OK but I really want to train at new spots”
That’s cool. Do it on your own time. Urban exploration is a huge part of parkour, but also much more enjoyable on your own or with a small group of friends. Sunday sessions are just too massive to be involved in random excursions.

“How is this supposed to make me better again?”
It allows for linear progression and a better learning experience for each technique. Practicing the same technique on a single obstacle will train that technique better than if you try to apply it to a bunch of random surroundings without first fully understanding the technique. This is why repetition is super important if you ever want to get really good at something. Also by the end of 3 or 4 weeks you will be less inhibited by the challenging forces of a given spot (ex. heights, precise railings, awkward run ups, etc.) Also training at the same spot will challenge you to think critically and creatively, ultimately enhancing your ability to teach yourself.

Parkour Class Changes

General

No more $50/$90 business and Wed/Friday stuff! For those of you unaware, an event of epic proportions will be taking place at the beginning of the Sunday session of the 18th of September. “What?” you may be asking yourself, “is going to happen?” Well, something that will rock the very foundation of the parkour community in BC.

I, David Baxter. . . . Will be shaving my head!

I’ll give you a moment to let that sink in and.. STOP! I am of perfectly sound body and mind in this decision, so put away your fire sticks and pitchforks.

I’ll be donating my hair to a group that makes wigs for cancer patients. Donations (Which, by the way, feel free to give!) will be donated to Balding For Dollars (BC Children’s Hospital). On top of feeling warm and fuzzy inside that your selfless deed will possibly benefit some small child with cancer, those who donate the most will get a shot at the champ . . . Uh, wait. Scratch that, get a chance to cut / shave a piece of my legendary do.

Thanks for all the love and support shown thus far through the community! But that’s not all! This event is also supported by the Coquitlam Dodgeball League (CDL). “Holy crap! There’s a dodgeball league?” you may be saying to yourself after possibly losing control of your bowels. The answer is YES. There is. I’m bridging the gap between two loves in my life, PKBC and CDL. Hopefully, they can get along with one another. Check out the league for more details!
www.cdldodgeball.ca

- Baxter

Post PKBC V…

General

I woke up at 12:30 PM on Monday. Breakfast was at IHOP at 2:30 with Josh and Amanda from Calgary. My foot was swollen, forcing me to walk with a gangster lean, my shoulders are sun burnt, and my head aches. Rain seems like the perfect cure for what was probably one of the most explosive weekends this community has ever seen.

I’m sitting here contemplating what made this weekend so special. What can “I” do to make next year even better? And then I realized I had nothing to do with it. Sure I put into motion a few good ideas and brought everyone together, but really the only reason this weekend was so amazing is because of you.

It was you who supported your friends and fellow athletes during the competitions! It was you who roared and cheered. It was you who sported the same dirty PKBC T-shirt for three days straight! It was you who lifted Mat Duncan in the air after he finally got that jump! (and then lifted Tom Copolla in the air for doing a sketchy roll) It was you who feasted upon watermelons! You who danced like idiots! You who shouted “Bee See”! And it was you who made this community a true honour to be a part of!

For those of you who missed out on the weekend here’s a quick recap:

Friday night was competition night. We had around 50 hopefuls attempt our elimination challenges. 21 Athletes made it through to the first speed course. Corey Methven dominated with an impressive 5:41 time. After that we took the athletes with the 10 best times and moved them on to a precision and balance course. Once again Corey beat the best score by 6 seconds with a time of 28:00! Next was another speed challenge with a slightly denser course. Tom Copolla pulled off a signature diving kong through parallel bars that left everyone else in his dust! The final round challenged the competitor’s strength with 3 events: a stride challenge, a sled drag, and a series of dynos while traversing along a difficult grip. Justin from Seattle edged the competition with some impressive strides and took the best score on the final round. At the end of the day Corey Methven took 1st place, Justin Sweeney 2nd, Tom Copolla 3rd, Jared Davis 4th, and Rami Mackay 5th!

Saturday we took some time to chill at Lynn Canyon. People that weren’t wrecked from the competition took part in the jumps, strides, and kongs provided by the trees, rocks, and hills. After some nice parkour appetizers we moved on to the main course: diving into the canyon! The fresh creek water running down the mountains was a nice refreshing cool down from the 30-degree weather. Next we headed up the hill for dessert (literally). We ate ice cream cones like “bausses” and hiked a little further to Lynn Head Waters. The day ended with a group discussion on the future of parkour, and what we as a community can do to make parkour better.

Early risers were in for a treat on Sunday with four FREE workshops including instruction on hand balancing, floreio, warm-ups/recovery, and the landing continuum. At 3:00 PM we all met up at the Art Gallery, and that’s when things got crazy. NINETY traceurs stormed over four different locations. We stopped in the middle to give our legs a rest and have another round table discussion. Once everyone’s intellectual hunger was peaked the giant parade of orange and green T-shirts made its way to Coal Harbor where we concluded our parkour “marathon”. Madness continued to take place until 8:30 PM before we threw in the towel and headed for all you can eat sushi! The owners of Tomokazu were given a run for their money when over twenty hungry traceurs rolled in. The energy kept its high all the way through dinner, so much that people forgot about the time and had to race to the skytrain minutes before it shut down for the night. I limped into home at around 1:00 AM and didn’t make it past the couch.

Thank you to everyone that came out this weekend. I have you to thank for this great success.

Sincerely,

Res.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

General

Get texts from @parkourbc via twitter [www.twitter.com/parkourbc] for location updates during the weekend!
